American abstract artist Jackson Pollock produced ‘Number 33’ in 1949 using his ‘drip technique’ which involved pouring or splashing household enamels onto a horizontal surface. The majority of this canvas has been produced using black industrial enamel which Pollock watered down to create a runny consistency. Pollock often applied the paint by pouring it directly onto the canvas or using a syringe, an implement Pollock handled ‘like a giant fountain pen’, according to his partner, the artist Lee Krasner.
