ABOUT:
Rare, antique book
"The City of the Sultan; and Domestic Manners of the Turks, in 1836" in three volumes- Vol. II (This is Volume II only)
by Miss Julia Pardoe. London : H. G. Clarke and Co., 1845. Third Edition.
This 3-volume work, first published in 1837, arose from a visit to Turkey made by Pardoe and her father in 1836. Pardoe
travels in western Turkey, visiting Bursa, the former Ottoman capital,
and encountering dervishes, hot springs and tortoises, before returning
to Europe via the Black Sea and the Danube. Her lively and observant
account of life in the declining but still powerful Ottoman empire
remains of great interest.
Julia Pardoe (1806-1862) was a prolific poet, novelist, and travel writer. In 1835 she accompanied her father to Constantinople, and "at the time it was felt that no woman apart from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu had acquired so intimate a knowledge of Turkey." This book, written shortly after her return to England, sought to disabuse Europeans of their 'ideal of Oriental mysteriousness, mysticism, and magnificence', offering what was hitherto 'probably the most detailed, most sympathetic description of the Turkish élite'. The work was quite popular and had been reprinted several times by 1850.

Greek Church at Pera, Russian Supremacy in Turkey, Traveling in an Araba, Moral Supineness of The Armenians, M. Nubar, Armenian Dance, Piety of the Turkish Women, Antiquities of Constantinople, The Roman Dungeons, The Mosque of Blood, The Turkish Araba, The Armenian Carriage, Turkish Women, The Grave-Yard, Watch Dog and Chinese, The Military Staff, The Pasha, Palace of Azme Sultane, The Sultan and the Georgian Slave, Armenian Mother, Armenian Quarter of Broussa, Catholics and Schismatics, Armenian Church, Turkey and Russia....
