Solitaire "Dolphin"

The Gangesdeflin is at home in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Kamaphuli-Sangu river systems in Nepal, India and Bangladesh, one of the most densely populated areas in the world. It is at risk from declining river water and silting due to deforestation, pollution and entanglement in fishing nets. In addition, populations are separated by dams due to changes in the river. A recent investigation identified less than 2,000 specimens in India.

The WWF began working with communities in India in 1997 to help preserve the Ganga dolphin. Municipalities were asked to use natural fertilizers, not to dispose of domestic wastewater in the river, to reforest riverside, and to ban commercial fishing and sand extraction. The WWF hopes that these measures will remove the threat of deterioration in natural habitats.
