SYNOPSIS ....

Three McBroom adventures in one - and illustrated by Quentin Blake!

In the further adventures of Josh McBroom, the crops grow so fast on his 'one acre' Iowa farm, you'd better step out of the way when you plant corn, red barns turn blue in the cold, and words freeze still in mid air.

Multiple award winning Jewish American writer Sid Fleischman (1920-2010), was an author of children's books, screenplays, novels for adults, and nonfiction books about magic. About the Author

Sid Fleischman (born 1920).

As a children's book author Sid Fleischman felt a special obligation to his readers. "The books we enjoy as children stay with us forever - they have a special impact. Paragraph after paragraph and page after page, the author must deliver his or her best work." With almost 60 books to his credit, some of which have been made into motion pictures, Sid Fleischman can be assured that his work will make a special impact.

Sid Fleischman wrote his books at a huge table cluttered with projects: story ideas, library books, research, letters, notes, pens, pencils, and a computer. He lived in an old-fashioned, two-story house full of creaks and character, and enjoys hearing the sound of the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Fleischman passed away after a battle with cancer on March 17, 2010, the day after his ninetieth birthday.

He was the father of Newbery Medal winning writer and poet Paul Fleischman, author of Joyful Noise; they are the only father and son to receive Newbery awards.

About the illustrator

Quentin Blake  .....  Sir Quentin Saxby Blake, CBE, FCSD, FRSL, RDI, (born  1932) is an English cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator and children's writer. He has illustrated over 300 books, including 18 written by Roald Dahl, which are among his most popular works.

Quentin Blake has been drawing ever since he can remember. He taught illustration for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art, of which he is an honorary professor. He has won many prizes, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, the Eleanor Farjeon Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal, and in 1999 he was appointed the first Children’s Laureate. In the 2013 New Year’s Honours List he was knighted for services to illustration.

Very  Interesting read!

"As fresh as ever." - Booklist.

FIVE STAR HILARITY!!  ... Three more hilarious tall tales about intrepid farmer Josh McBroom, his dear wife Melissa, all 11 children, and of course, their wonderful 1-acre farm.

In "McBroom the Rainmaker," there's a drought so fierce that the children have had to teach polliwogs how to swim--they had never seen any water! The skeeters are also the worst anyone can ever remember. McBroom comes up with an ingenious plan to take care of the drought and the woodpecker-sized mosquitos all at once.

I don't usually read ghost stories to my kids, so they were not sure what was up when we started in on "McBroom's Ghost." There's all sorts of trouble when a dry-bones starts mimicking all the sounds around the farm. Plus, Heck Jones--their hee-hawing scoundrel of a neighbor--has bought a whole bunch of razorback hogs, which he feeds by way of turning 'em loose on the McBroom's property. I have to quote one of my favorite parts:

"Well, I'll admit he was right about that. We fenced our farm, but those infernal hogs busted through and scattered the pieces like a cyclone. We strung barbed wire. It only stopped them long enough to scratch their backs. Barbed wire was a comfort to those razorbacks."

Makes me smile just typing it out! By the end of this chapter my kids were laughing (and relieved, I think!) Spoiler: it's not actually a ghost causing all the trouble.

When a cyclone sucks up every inch of McBroom's marvelous topsoil, he and the family follow it to see where it dumps it all. Unfortunately, the pile is so big and so far away, that they aren't going to be able to get it home without help. Along the way, they find all sorts of rare and unique creatures, including the Sidehill Gouger, the Desert Vamooser, and even the extremely endangered Great Hairy Prairie Hidebehind. Well, they try to find the Hidebehind. Problem is, it's always hiding behind you, so it's awfully hard to catch sight of. They end up starting "McBroom's Zoo" with all their marvelous animals--for a time anyway. Just long enough to make some cash, so they can hire help in transporting their topsoil back home again.

Another hit! Just like the first, McBroom's Wonderful One-Acre Farm, this one was filled with all kinds of colorful words like "gallinippers," "confounded," "flapdoodle," "hornswoggle," and "shoofly pie," among many others. Fun to read and fun to listen to! Not only that, this time around the kids could recite all 11 children's names with me! The stories themselves were short, self-contained, and satisfying.

So much FUN!! .... This great book contains three tall tales – and boy, are they TALL, funny, clever, and absolutely delightful! Several adults reviewed them as memorable favorites from their childhood and rereading them years later did not dampen their opinions at all.

There are several McBroom tall tales in several adventurous books. It is my recommendation to read “McBroom’s Wonderful One-Acre Farm” first, as it sets up the rest of the tales by telling the reader exactly how McBroom got his wonderful one-acre farm. Specifically read ‘McBroom Tells the Truth’ first, then you’re all set for all the hilarious adventures of McBroom, his wife, and all eight kids: “WilljillhesterchesterpeterpollytimtommarylarryandlittleClarinda”. (Yup. I spelled that correctly!) Reading this to the 1st-4th grade set, I guarantee kids will have those names memorized as one word by the end of the story!

I can’t possibly forget mentioning the amazingly fun illustrations by talented Quentin Blake. They are funny, delightful – and absolutely perfect!

Each of the tall tales would be a complete out–loud family read lasting about 20 minutes. I love stories like this that are humorous read for the adult reader as well as the kids. Smiles and laughs in every story and every illustration!

Loved these stories! McBroom and his tall tales get honored places on my library shelf!

Added note - McBroom is also a great choice for a classroom unit on tall tales vs. fairy tales.

I enjoyed this book about McBroom also. .... There are several others too. I especially enjoyed the part that compared "small" prairie mosquitoes as being the size of woodpeckers! I gave this 4 stars mostly because of how much my son has enjoyed reading it.

A HOOT! ..... Gardening and tall tales.... sounds like a good read for a gardener to me. Mostly tall tales but I want his top soil. It is so fertile that they can set a clock by how fast peas or beans grow. Also when he needs a new shoe size...just stands in the topsoil and his feet and shoes grow.

Pretty cool. I know some gardeners like to say how big their tomatoes are and maybe some of those are tall tales too.

Cute book for kids reading (elementary...3rd grade maybe??) and all ages

Marvellous Reading!
