About Merryvale

Merryvale Fabric Packets were produced monthly from 1993 to 2007.  They featured fabrics selected from a new fabric collection created for quilt making.  They are cut into six-inch squares and usually contained 26 pieces.   Fabric collections rotated to present quilters with a variety of new fabrics being produced by leading companies in the industry.  In selecting from individual fabric collections, quilters became aware of designers’ intent regarding coordinated scale of prints and colorways.

WILLIAM MORRIS V is reproduced from originals in The Victoria & Albert Museum and The Bridgeman Art Library in London.  In addition to designs by Morris himself, several are done by his associate, John Henry Dearle (1860-1932) from layouts for wallpaper--Wilton Bough, Blackthorn, Leicester, Hyacinth, Anemone, and Golden Lilly.

Few individuals have achieved so much in one lifetime as William Morris (1834-1896).  He was an accomplished artist, poet, writer, translator, calligrapher, publisher, political activist, and manufacturer.  His extraordinarily beautiful designs set the standard for textiles and other decorative arts, and their ageless appeal has inspired designers and craftsmen in a variety of commercial fields.

While these are often considered to be his most enduring legacy, it was his views on society and methods of manufacture that proved to be a major influence on the Arts and Crafts Movement, embracing his ideals on the value of handcraftsmanship.  He believed that the importance placed on new industrial technology had resulted in the erosion of the role of the craftsman, with a subsequent loss of traditional skills. Emphasis on speed and profits provided technically correct yet artistically dead products, and the emphasis away from individual involvement and artistry resulted in a marked decline in design quality.  Morris' philosophy and ideals were adopted wholehartedly by the Arts and Crafts Movement.  His credo was "Have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

The William Morris V collection has been created under the direction of Woodrow Studio of England.  To enhance these historic prints, a number of textured backgrounds have been included to complement the timeless Morris & Co. designs.
