Luchino Viscontis sehr subjektiv geprägte und eigenwillige Filmbiografie des "Märchenkönigs" Ludwig II. Bei Kritikern und Filmfans gilt der Film als Meistwerk – bei seiner Uraufführung in Deutschland geriet er jedoch wegen seiner Darstellung von Ludwigs Homosexualität vor allem in Bayern zum (politischen) Skandal, fiel einer rigorosen Zensur zum Opfer und kam extrem gekürzt in die Kinos. Viscontis eigenwillige, in den historischen Details penibel gestaltete Inszenierung konzentriert sich kaum auf die historisch "großen" Momente in Ludwigs Leben, sondern versucht vielmehr, die privaten Interessen und Eigenarten des Monarchen zu beleuchten.

Luchino Visconti’s very subjectively embossed and unconventional film biography about the “Fairy Tale King”, Ludwig II.  Both critics and film fans consider the film a masterpiece; but when the work premiered in Germany, such a scandal was caused by his depiction of Ludwig as a homosexual --- especially in Bavaria --- that the film fell victim to censorship and was shown in theatres for only a very brief time.  Visconti’s idiosyncratic work doesn’t concentrate much on the historically “great” moments in Ludwig’s life, but rather deals much more with his private interests and peculiarities.
