Design is from a sketch, called "The Man Tree" by Hieronymus Bosch, circa 1470s. The name of the creature is later changed to the "Tree-Man", which appears, in the Bosch triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights.

The "Tree-Man" is the focus, of the right panel of The Garden of Earthly Delights,.along with a pair of human ears brandishing a blade. A cavity in the torso is populated by three naked persons at a table, seated on an animal, and a fully clothed woman pouring drink from a barrel.
