In view is a classic vintage Nikon Offset Bracket for the Nikon S Rangefinder camera system. The Offset Bracket first appeared on the Nikon Price List in the United States on May 1, 1956 when the Nikon S2 was was still the 'new kid on the block.' The S2 had a single bright frame in the viewfinder, for the 50mm standard lens. To use a different lens you’d need a finder to frame your photos. If you wanted to use your Nikon BC-IV flash with that lens you were in trouble: the S2, like any camera, has a single shoe mount! What’s a photographer to do???
To solve the dilemma the engineers at Nippon Kogaku came up with the Offset Bracket. The bracket offers two shoe mounts, one in standard position for the viewfinder and one placed at 45º above and left of center. It’s perfect for eliminating ‘red-eye’ and allowing the use of a viewfinder too. Manufactured of plastic and metal, this example is in fine usable condition. The Offset Bracket maintains the cordless functionality of the BC-IV flash system and eliminates the multiple unwanted affects of flash directly from the lens axis. In great condition, the Offset Bracket carries the patina of it’s vintage and minor marks of use but is solid and great for use or display alongside your vintage Nikon RF collection.
