**Please measure carefully as pet's head must fit through this collar. These martingale collars do not have a buckle that opens, but we carry Cetacea martingales that have a design that opens at the neck. Search our store using CETACEA and they will pop up. How to measure & determine the size you need for a Slip-On Martingale or Half-Check collar (slips over the head):

  • Measure 1) the largest part of your dog's head, and 2) the middle of his/her neck.
  • If your dog's head is larger than its neck, you will use your dogs head measurement to determine the size you need.
  • If your dogs neck is larger than his head, you will use your dogs neck measurement to determine the size you need.

How does a martingale work? A martingale (half check) dog collar is made with two loops, the large loop is placed around the dog’s neck and adjusted to fit loosely. The dog lead is then clipped to the D ring on the small loop. When the dog tries to pull their head out of the collar, the tension on the dog lead pulls the small loop taut, which makes the larger loop smaller and tighter on the neck and thereby preventing escape.

When adjusted correctly your dog cannot choke, but the collar will stay snug around your dog’s neck (just behind the ears) until the pressure is released.
