What is Gelcoat - Do I need Gelcoat ?
Gelcoat is the outer shiny layer found on fibrelass objects, a boat is a good example, it provides a hard UV protected and waterproof layer :
Gelcoat deliberately has an impeded cure and is designed to cure TACKY
A typical construction is to apply Gelcoat to a mould, It cures tacky which is needed to then add a re-enforcements like fibreglass. When the item is demoulded, the Gelcoat is now the outer shiny layer. The finish is dependent on the quality of the mould but additional sanding and polishing can enhance the finish.
So gelcoat is optimised for use with moulds.
What is Topcoat ( Gelcoat repair, Flo coat ) ?
We take the gelcoat product but now add wax ( 2% ) , the wax doesnt cure when activated and floats to the top to provide a thin skin. The product underneath however does cure touch dry and not Tacky. We could call this Gelcoat + wax, Or gelcoat repair but common names are Topcoat or Flow Coat. In short its the same gelcoat with a bit of wax added.
All of our topcoat ( gelcoat repair ) products have the wax added already so no need to do this your self .
So now we have a almost identical Gelcoat ( now called topcoat ) product that now cures TOUCH dry . This is well suited for repairs to a gelcoat surface, a boat hull is a great example , for initial coating. This topcoat layer can still be sanded and polished.
Multiple Layers - You can do multiple layers - but sanding is required after each layer- This removes the wax coating and " keys " the surface so a good mechanical anchor is achieved.
WARNING : Gelcoat and Topcoat products have a very strong and powerful smell, This is common for all Polyester resin products,
Use gloves and keep repair area well ventilated.
Shelf life is 4 months from date of purchase, but tends to be longer if stored out of sunlight in cool conditions.
How to Use:
- Gelcoat and Topcoat are still a resin based product so accurate mixing with the supplied MEKP hardener is required- DO NOT GUESS this.
- Mix by weight using kitchan scales. Mix the supplied MEKP hardener at 2% by weight - so for every 100g add 2ml MEKP hardener or 20ml for every 1000g- Mix well
- Working time is approx 10-15 minutes at 18 deg C- Hot conditions can rapidly reduce this working time so avoid , mix liitle and often. Cold conditions lengthen working and cure time
- Surfaces require preperation and Keying by sanding with a medium grit before applying the product
- Expect full cure in 24 hours ( assuming mild temperatures ) .

Delivery is by ECONOMY COURIER to all parts of the UK including N.I. Scottish Highlands & Islands, IOW, IOM but sadly NOT Channel islands.
A £2.20 surcharge is applied for Scottish Highlands, N.I. IOM , Scottish Islands. This is the actual charge applied by the courier and is not marked up in any way. Deliveries to very remote areas can take significantly longer to arrive often 4-7 working days, this should be factored into any order.
We send on working days - Mon to Friday - This does not include weekends or Bank holidays - Same day dispatch cut off is 1200.
Returns:
We accept returns up until 30 days after date of purchase. Unwanted items must be returned at the buyers cost , we will refund item cost but not postage charges. If any items are damaged , you may be asked to provide photo's of the damage. Our policy is to send replacements to recitfy these issues. Please DO NOT return items without getting in touch first via the ebay message system . We will use the ebay return system to manage returns.
