A simply stunning Victorian inkwell with Neoclassical decoration by Elkington & Co.
Engraved throughout with Gods & Goddesses, Warriors and mythical creatures, the central hinged lid features Diana on her chariot. The surrounding border has a further six detailed pictures interspersed with winged creatures and torches. It is marked to the base with Elkington & Co and numbered 941 and dates c1850.
There is a plain circular glass container for ink which is in excellent condition. The silver plating has worn in places, allowing the copper to shine through and overall, with the gilded inner ring, there is a wonderful warmth to this piece. An excellent item.
