"This book describes vividly the loss of the cream of the Nazi U-boat fleet during the winter of 1943-1944. The season started with large German wolf packs, hunting with their newly perfected acoustic homing torpedoes. They held the North Atlantic lifeline in a death grip. But gradually their stranglehold on allied shipping was broken as American and British codebreakers read the German naval signals and diverted the convoys around the waiting hunters. Many U-boats returned to port with their torpedoes unfired. Early in 1944, the Germans tried reducing the size of the wolf packs. Groups of three, and then later even single submarines, were given the task of locating and attacking Atlantic convoys. Nazi efforts proved to be in vain as the hunters became the hunted. Increasing sophistication and experience of American, British and Canadian antisubmarine forces seized the initiative from the Germans. Aerial patrols by U. S. Army and Navy aircraft became increasingly effective while improved radar served to deny the U-boats the sanctuary of the night" [from the dust jacket].
