J.E.B. Stuart, then a U.S. Army officer, designed and patented this quick-attach saber hanger in 1859.  The Damnyankee Army bought thousands of them during the War of Northern Aggression, and they remained in service up til 1902 in the Regular Army, even longer in state units.
