FROM THE BOX:

Why No Speak?

Throughout the past decode, the name Miles Copeland is synonymous with innovation in pop music. Nine years ago, Copeland took for the innocence and thunder of the '60s and coupled it with the fast-bending sensibilities of the times. The result was I.R.S. Records, the visionary little label that went on to give the world R.E.M., the Go-Go's, the Alarm and Timbuk 3.

1988. And again the name in the news is Miles Copeland. As I.R.S. prospers as a "semi-major" label, Copeland again looks back into the future. In an era in which rock music conforms to a rigid formula of look, structure and style, Copeland again bends the rules. Thus is born the No Speak series.

No Speak is an instrumental rock label for the '90s. Its sound is based firmly in the rock idiom, but unencumbered with banal lyrics aimed at teens by players who took like Vogue models or punk/metal trendies. Copeland observed that the visual and lyrical emphasis of much current music, as well as the 3-minute "single" form, had disenfranchised some of rock's top players. They just didn't cut it as MTV idols. Decreed Copeland: "Let those guitars wail!"

By now, it should be apparent that what No Speak isn't is New Age. No Speak eats New Age for breakfast. No sleepy dinner music here, No Speak is active, vital, accomplished foreground music for a segment of the market that hasn't been to the record store lately.

The "Progressive" audience from the '60s and 70s, now forced to live life amidst '80s and '90s complexities, will admire the skill, the integrity and the drive of No Speak, along with its compatibility with thought.

Rock as it was meant to be played, No Speak is unafraid to showcase energy and virtuosity. It's music to awaken to, drive to, work to, socialize to, even relax to. It is decidedly not recommended, however, as an insomnia cure. For that, there exist vast catalogs of New Age music available.

No Speak is targeted to people firmly rooted in rock n' roll who have a hard time connecting with jazz or classical but have trouble with rock bands singing songs of rebellion to adolescent youths. It's available on compact disc, high quality cassettes and records, all with liner notes. Ifs ready to meet you exactly where you live.

Who Is No Speak?

We've chosen to showcase four excellent and highly disparate artists for No Speak's initial release. The sonically-dexterous dual guitar leads of Wishbone Ash counterpoint Stewart Copeland's heady cinematic sounds. Multi-instrumentalist and studio wizard William Orbit is given full creative reign here while the skilled, sensitive fingerings of former Climax Blues Band axeman Pete Haycock meld with horns and keyboards to etch vital new horizons in, yes, instrumental rock.

Copeland, meanwhile, is busily selecting the next four No Speak artists, and the next four after that. The second batch may sound nothing like the first. But it will have in common the high standard of playing and vision. Music too good for words.

NOTE: When CD's were first introduced, the manufacturers packaged them in the now-standard plastic jewel cases, but then put that CD and jewel case in a large, sealed cardboard box which everyone called the "Long Box." (Approximately 6" X 12") This was so the retailer could display the CD's, which seemed so little at the time, in the same display racks as the vinyl LP records. Plus, the long box added a little security as it was harder to steal a large object than a small one. As the LP records disappeared from stores, so did the CD long boxes. This new, hard to find CD is still sealed in the original long box!

Songs include:
  1. Pete Haycock - Lucienne
  2. Pete Haycock - Terry Anne
  3. Wishbone Ash - Something's Happening In Room 602
  4. Wishbone Ash - Flags Of Convenience
  5. William Orbit - Fire and Mercy
  6. William Orbit - Via Caliente
  7. Stewart Copeland - The Equalizer Busy Equalizing
  8. Stewart Copeland - Screaming Lord Cole and The Commanches
