Original late Victorian cabinet portrait of an older lady seated in a studio setting, photographed by Paul Stabler, Artist and Photographer, 62, 63 & 64 John Street, Sunderland.
The sitter is particularly appealing as she is shown knitting, holding the needles and work in her hands rather than simply posing formally for the camera. Her dark Victorian dress, decorative lace collar and brooch give the photograph plenty of period character.
The photographer's beautifully printed reverse carries a crown emblem and the wording “Patronized by the Royal Family”, together with Paul Stabler's Sunderland address. The mount is a page taken from a very damaged album and also has an attractive ornamental border and gilt-edged portrait aperture.
I would date this photograph to approximately the 1880s–1890s, making it an interesting piece of Victorian social history as well as a lovely example of Sunderland photography.
Condition
Good antique condition for its age. The photograph remains clear with good detail. There is some age-related surface marking, spotting and general wear, with light marks and wear to the card mount and edges as shown. The decorative reverse remains attractive and clearly legible.
