Victorian portrait photograph showing a young baby posed inside a large wicker basket. The child is beautifully dressed in white and the photograph is presented within an attractive decorative floral mount with gilt edging.

The reverse carries the impressive printed photographer’s backmark for Gunn & Stuart, 2 The Quadrant, Richmond, S.W., beneath a Royal-style coat of arms. It also advertises their service for enlarging portraits to life size and having them painted in oil or watercolours.

A particularly appealing example of late Victorian child photography, made more unusual by the wonderful wicker basket studio prop and decorative presentation mount.

I would date this photograph to approximately the 1890s.

A lovely original piece of Victorian social and photographic history and an attractive addition to a collection of antique photographs, childhood imagery or Richmond local history.

Condition:

Good antique condition for its age. The photograph remains clear with expected age-related fading and tonal variation. The decorative mount shows some age-related marks, spotting, discolouration and general handling wear, particularly around the edges. The photographer’s details on the reverse remain clear and legible.

The mount is a page taken from a very damaged album and also has an attractive ornamental border and gilt-edged portrait aperture.
