A scarce and historically interesting piece of early Victorian commercial ephemera associated with Louise, Baroness Lehzen (1784-1870), the influential governess and lifelong confidante of Queen Victoria.

This item comprises an engraved Dison & Co., Lace Manufacturers, 237 Regent Street, London billhead, trade stationery sheet, or related commercial wrapper, bearing the contemporary manuscript inscription:

"Mad.m Lehzen"

The identification is secure. The inscription corresponds to Baroness Lehzen, and the attribution is reinforced by the presence of other papers in the same collection addressed to both Miss Lehzen and Baroness Lehzen.

Particularly noteworthy is the engraved royal warrant:

"By Special Appointment to Their Royal Highnesses the Duchesses of Kent & Cambridge."

This creates a direct connection with the household of the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria. Lehzen served within that household from 1819 and became one of the defining influences on the future Queen's upbringing and education.

The engraving is printed directly onto the sheet, with the original plate mark clearly visible surrounding the vignette. The design was likely employed across invoices, billheads, commercial stationery and related business papers.

An attractive and unusual survival combining:

  • Queen Victoria interest
  • Baroness Lehzen interest
  • Royal household history
  • Kensington Palace associations
  • Victorian trade and retail ephemera
  • Royal warrant advertising
  • Regent Street commercial history

A scarce item relating to one of the most significant non-royal figures in Queen Victoria's early life.
