A VERY FRESH *MLH STRIP-OF-THREE AUSTRALIAN KING GEORGE V SINGLE WATERMARK: DISPLAYING THE THREE OVERPRINT TYPES: "a, b & c" WITH STAMP No 12 DISPLAYING THE CONDITION WHERE THE LAST STOP AFTER 'ISLANDS' BEGINS TO DISAPPEAR - THIS EXAMPLE SHOWS THE DOT AS ALMOST HALVED - THE 'NO-STOP' (AT ALL) IS VERY RARE - SEE PURVES REF BELOW
THE NWPI OVERPRINT was applied to panes of 30 stamps, arranged in 5 horizontal rows of 6 stamps each. The ’type’ used for the overprint is known as “Brevier De Vinne” capitals, which has the peculiarity of having two kinds of “S”. One known as the “Starting S” intended for the beginning of a word only which has a small upper loop and a large lower loop while the other “S” (for use in the middle or at the end of a word) has both loops small and alike. This difference in “S”s is often disregarded by printers, as is the case in these overprints by J.B. COOKE (the Government Stamp Printer of the day) when he set up the overprint. This is the 'stated' reason why we have the ‘variations’ of "S"s in the word 'ISLANDS' below:
TYPE a: Both loops of both “S”s are small. Both are “Ending “S”s.
TYPE b: First “S” has a small upper loop and a large lower loop. Second “S” has both small and alike.
TYPE c: Both “S”s have small upper loop and large lower loops. Both are “Starting “S”s.
*This STRIP is MLH (1st Stamp) and MUH (the two stamps below) all with original gum. This piece can be 'PLATED' in the FORME as STAMPS 12, 18 and 24 by the variety at STAMP 12 (please see the PURVES REFERENCE below). Good centering (a tad right) with lovely perforations FROM THE FOURTH SETTING (JRW PURVES: "NORTH WEST PACIFIC ISLANDS - THE NATURE AND MAKE UP OF THE DIFFERENT OVERPRINTING FORMES 1966). Please see below for the significance of STAMP 12 which displays the "GRADUALLY DISAPPEARING STOP after "ISLANDS". A very nice piece for the specialist collector.
