The Sa avid dynasty was one of the most significant ruling dynasties reigning from 1501 to 1736, in the Near East Region.  Their rule is often considered the beginning

of the modern history in the region.  The Saf vid Shah Ismail I established the Twelver denomination of Shi'a Islam as the official religion of the the empire, making one

of the most important turning points in the history of Islam.

Tah asp I was the second shah of Saf vid dynasty from 1524 until his death in 1576.  He was the eldest son of Ismail I.  Ta masp ascended the throne after the death of

his father.  The first years of his reign were marked by civil wars between the Qizilbash leaders until 1532, when he asserted his authority and began an absolute

monarchy.  He was a patron of the arts and was an accomplished painter himself.  Ta masp's succession was disputed even before his death; after his death a civil war

erupted, causing the deaths of most of the royal family.   His reign, spanning nearly 52 years, was the longest of any ruler of the dynasty.  Modern historians recognize

Ta masp as a courageous and capable commander who preserved and expanded his father's empire.
