These are a pair of vintage, hand-carving style openwork wooden wall plaque featuring an intricate openwork pattern of birds, lotus flowers, and botanical leaves.
These dimensional fretwork pieces are often carved out of native hardwoods like suar wood or teak.
They are highly popular as bohemian, mid-century modern, or traditional Asian/Balinese home decor elements.
Origin: Southeast Asia (Primarily Bali, Indonesia)
The Craftsmanship: This style of deep fretwork, or openwork carving (ukiran), is a signature art form of Bali, Indonesia.
Balinese carvers are globally renowned for transforming solid wood planks into delicate, three-dimensional scenes.
The Motif: The depiction of cranes or herons amidst blooming lotus flowers and large lily pads is a highly traditional theme in Indonesian and broader Asian art. It symbolises peace, longevity, and purity.
The Material: The uniform, smooth grain pattern and rich reddish-brown color match suar wood (Monkey Pod wood) or native teak, which are standard materials used by Indonesian woodworkers for export art.
Era: late 20th Century (Circa 1970s–1990s)
The Vintage Import Boom: During the 1970s and 1980s, there was a massive surge in the popularity of bohemian, naturalist, and tropical interiors globally. Large quantities of these hand-carved floral and fauna relief panels were imported from Bali into western home decor markets.
Design Indicators: The smoothly finished, softly rounded contours of the frame combined with the stylised curves of the lotus stems are highly characteristic of production items from the latter half of the 20th century rather than an ancient or antique architectural fragment.
They measure approx. 45cm long x 28cm wide and the design is mirrored.
They are in very good condition, please see pictures.
