Mechanically, this watch is in running condition - the 25J STC 452 (Durowe 7522) movement winds via either the automatic winding rotor or the crown, and once running, runs steadily; the date turns over correctly at midnight. The screw-down HEV crown sets the hands and advances the date, as well as smoothly screwing down, as designed (diver watches from this era, as a rule, didn't go to the expense of utilizing HEV crowns for watches with a water resistance rating of less than 600 feet, so while not marked with a specific WR rating, it should be assumed that this watch model was built with a 20ATM WR rating.) All that said, while the watch runs steadily once wound, time keeping has not been measured; however, as with all vintage watches with an indeterminate service history (and this one is over 50 years years old now), it should be assumed that a servicing will need to be administered in order for the watch to keep accurate time.
Cosmetically, the 37mm diameter stainless steel case is in nice clean overall condition, with normal wear evidenced in the form of light scratches/marks, but it otherwise retains well defined lines, corners and edges. The case back is also in nice condition, showing some faint scratches but otherwise displaying crisp factory stamping (please see the photos posted in this listing for the best description of the physical condition of this watch.) The black and silver diver's bezel is in nice shape, showing just a few light scratches, and turns smoothly, without any looseness or "play" in the action. The original dark metallic gray dial and matching minute track rehaut with lumed block hour markers and date window at 3 o'clock are in terrific condition, as is the original handset, which includes a classic syringe second hand and which features lume that has darkened to a tan color, similar to the lume on the dial's hour markers, which has toned to a light orange hue. The original screw-down HEV crown is in great condition, as is the crystal, which is clean and clear overall.
The watch is mounted on a new olive green single pass NATO strap (stamped 'NATO' on the bead blasted buckle) which suits the watch very nicely, and will fit a wrist of up to approximately 8 1/2" in size in this configuration.
Nice examples of Vantage's Sting Ray saturation diver have been showing up for sale less and less frequently over the last 4-5 years, so if you've been looking to add one to your collection, this is a solid candidate for consideration.
