About this book: The Provoked Wife opened at Lincoln's Inn Fields in April 1697, with a star cast and to much applause. Like 'The Relapse', it was condemned by Jeremy Collier.
The main plot concerns the marriage of Sir John and Lady Brute. His boredom drives him to drink and to vent his spleen on his wife; hers inclines her towards adultery with Constant, her faithful suitor for two years. The courtship of Hertfree and Bellinda forms the sub-plot: both likeable and witty characters, whose humour and commonsense offer a strong contrast to Sir John. All five have their moments of disturbance from Lady Fancyfull, outrageous and jealous, abetted by Madamoiselle and determined to thwart any happy outcome. Contents: Acknowledgements; Introduction: The Author, The Play, Stage History, Note on the Text; Abbreviations; Further Reading. The Provoked Wife: Dramatis Personae, Prologue, Text, Epilogue; Appendix A: The Revised Scenes; Appendix B: Two Additional Songs. Contains 6 main male roles (there are other minor roles); and 4 main female roles (there are other minor roles)
