Description
An 18th century Dutch brass tobacco box with scratch-decorated artwork on the lid and bottom, and writing around the sides. It measures 6 3/4" long by 2" wide by 1 1/4" thick. I've owned dozens of these boxes, but this one is a first in my experience. The artwork commonly found on these boxes is usually religious or maritime in nature, or is depicting domestic life, with an emphasis on lovers, drinkers and other revelers. This example is unique in my experience. Both surfaces are decorated with classical references. The figures on the lid are identified as, and depict, Diana the Huntress and Mercury. The captioned representations on the bottom are of Venus and the famous ill-starred lovers Pyramus and Thisbe. The surfaces show the appealing effect of the piece being left long un-polished. The top fits very well. There are a couple of small stains on the back side, but there are no other apparent issues on the exterior. The bottom has been rather clumsily re-soldered from the inside, not a difficult issue to correct.
