(58) This listing is for a Rare and Interesting little Antique (c late 1800s) Religious Artefact - A Card Carton containing a large quantity (approx 100) of Hand Rolled Paper Scrolls, each Printed with a Different Biblical Verse or Religious Quote, together with the small set of tweezers.. They are Components of a 'Promise Box' (sometimes called a Box of Promises or Daily Manna Box). The tiny (21mm high) scrolls feature encouraging Bible verses or religious quotes intended for daily spiritual reflection. The practice dates back as far as the mid-19th century, gaining widespread popularity during the late Victorian era and the early 20th century.
Each morning, at meal times, or during family devotions, a person would use the tweezers to pull out one scroll at random. They would unroll it, read the scripture, and reflect on that particular "promise" from God for the rest of their day. The quote shown in one of the photos is "Thou art the God that doest wonders" from Psalm 77:14.
Later versions in the mid-to-late 20th century transitioned to flat cards rather than scrolls, often housed inside little plastic or wooden containers shaped like a loaf of bread (famously known as "Our Daily Bread" or "Bread of Life" boxes).
This beautiful little artefact would make a lovely addition to any collection of antique religious paraphernalia.
