Rabbi Dr. Papo (1898-1996) Graduated with a Ph. D. at the University of Vienna in 1922, and was ordained Rabbi by the Chief Rabbinate of Yugoslavia in 1938. He was interred at Dachau during the war. After his liberation from the Camps, he worked for the Sephardi community in Manchester. In 1944, Mr. Rosin, after interviewing Dr. Papo, recommended his appointment as the first Minister of the Sephardi Hebrew Congregation of Rhodesia, and he arrived in Salisbury in April 1944. He served the community as Rabbi, Rosh Beth Din, and Headmaster of the Sephardi Hebrew School from 1944 until his retirement in 1963.
