BACKGROUND

French bisque bebes were produced by the Paris doll workshops from the late 1870s, and by the 1890s open-mouth models with sleep eyes on French wood-and-composition jointed bodies had become standard. This doll dates from approximately 1890-1910.

DESCRIPTION

- Bisque socket head with deep blue glass fixed eyes 

- Painted upper and lower lashes, heavy multi-stroke feathered brows

- Open mouth with moulded upper teeth, coral-painted lips

- French wood and composition fully jointed body 

- Blonde ringlet wig on a net cap

-  Silk red dress with black velvet bands, cream cotton blouse

- Hand-knitted socks and red felt slippers with blue blanket stitching

MARKS

Incised X and 8 at the back of the neck

Red artist check mark

No other marks

CONDITION

- Small old porcelain repaint repair under the left eye, visible on close inspection

- One hand missing some fingers; the other hand with chips and paint loss to fingertips and back of hand

- Chips to the toes and wear at the knee joints

- Body finish with age wear, rubs and flaking

- Wig later replacements
