  • A 1988 BMW 316i Baur Cabriolet (specifically known as the E30 Baur TC2 or "Top Cabriolet") is a fascinating, rare, and highly distinct slice of classic BMW history.

  • Because it is a 316i, it represents a very specific crossover period for the E30 generation.
  • Before BMW launched its own factory-built, full convertible E30 in 1986, it partnered with the famous German coachbuilder Karosserie Baur to offer a drop-top option.
  • Even after BMW’s official convertible arrived, you could still order a Baur conversion directly through BMW dealerships until 1991
  • The Roof Skeleton: Instead of completely removing the roof, Baur kept the side window frames, door pillars, and a thick, central roll-over bar (targa hoop) for safety and structural rigidity.
  • The Two-Piece Roof: It uses a clever split system. You can remove the solid targa panel over the front seats (stowing it in the boot), fold down the canvas rear window web, or do both for a full open-top experience.
  • Rarity: While standard E30 convertibles are common, Baur coachbuilt conversions are much harder to find. Only 14,426 TC2 units were produced globally across the entire E30 lifespan, with just a fraction designated for the UK right-hand-drive market.
