This is a beautiful Porsgrund Norway Theodor Kittelsen lithophane candle holder, made of unglazed white bisque porcelain. The cylindrical holder features beautifully detailed raised relief scenes around the exterior, with “Th. Kittelsen” incorporated into the design.

The imagery is based on the work of renowned Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen (1857–1914). Porsgrund worked with Kittelsen and other important Norwegian artists, and his artwork became part of the company's decorative porcelain tradition. The Kittelsen imagery associated with these pieces includes Elgen kommer for Tørsten at slukke (“The Moose Comes to Quench Its Thirst”), one of the twelve works in his Tirilil-Tove series created in 1900. 

The unglazed bisque porcelain is designed to create the wonderful lithophane effect when illuminated from inside: light passes through the thinner portions of the relief, creating variations of light and shadow that reveal the artwork. A documented Porsgrund Kittelsen lithophane candle holder has the same artist's name incised into the porcelain and is described as a bisque porcelain candle holder. 

The bottom bears the Porsgrund PP/anchor mark with “1885–2018 PORSGRUND,” commemorating the company's long Norwegian history. Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik was founded in 1885 and began porcelain production in 1887. 

A particularly lovely piece for a collector of Porsgrund porcelain, Norwegian art, Theodor Kittelsen, Scandinavian design or lithophanes.
