Collector-attributed Newnan projectile point or knife from the Ed Hanley collection, presented in its accompanying Riker display box. The typed collector label reads: “NEWNAN / Mid-Archaic / 4000–3000 BC.”
The point is approximately 2 inches long, 1 5/8 inches wide, and roughly 3/8 inch thick at its thickest point. It appears to be knapped from translucent pink-orange agatized fossil coral, with cream and golden coloration and visible coral-like starburst patterns throughout the stone.
The form features a broad triangular blade, contracting stem, pronounced shoulders, and a generally straight-to-rounded base. Both faces show extensive flake work. The point remains substantially complete, with scattered small edge and basal nicks, minor tip wear, surface deposits, and natural mineral variation consistent with an older collected stone artifact. No obvious repair or restoration is visible. Please examine all photographs closely for condition and workmanship.
Substantially complete with minor edge and basal wear. One shoulder/barb is shorter and more rounded than the other, creating some asymmetry in the hafting area. Whether this resulted from original manufacture, ancient reworking, or an old loss is unknown. No fresh break or modern repair is apparent.
Provenance: From the Ed Hanley collection. No individual find-location documentation accompanied this point. It is unknown whether Ed Hanley personally found it or acquired it from an earlier collection.
When held against a strong light, the stone displays striking deep orange-red translucency, especially along the blade edges and thinner flaked areas.
