A BEAUTIFUL 9d VIOLET (3rd WATERMARK) DIE IIB KANGAROO VARIETY: "BROKEN SHADING LINES BELOW POSTAGE" - PLATE POSITION 4L1 - ACSC 2025 CV$125 - DIE IIB SCARCE MARSUPIAL
The Die IIB 3rd Watermark 9d Violet was printed by T.S. HARRISON in September/October 1918. The earliest 'date-of-use' known is 16 April 1919. These were printed off two Plates (an Upper and Lower) each with 120 stamps on in two panes of 60 (each with 10 rows of 6 stamps). They were used as the 'interstate telegram rate' and as the 'make-up' use for the 'parcel rate' of the time. There were 20 printings made between October 1918 and August 1927, totalling some 59,605,440 Die IIB stamps. This variety is listed in THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALIST'S CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) as:

This variety recurs at 4L1 … that is … it is the 1st STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE 4 (the Lower Plate used to print the Die IIb 3rd Watermark 9d Violet Kangaroos from September 1918). The variety is found in the 3rd Watermark only and this one is very nice. It is centered a little low with very good perforations and a neat CDS. A GEM for that 3rd Watermark collection. Please note the watermark lines at the back confirming that the stamp is from the top left position.
