Description
You are bidding on a SCARCE copy of
Ballad Songs of Peasantry England
Taken Down From Oral Recitation and Transcribed from Private Manuscript Rare Manuscripts and Scarce Publications
by James Henry Dixon
pub Charles Griffin and Co, undated, advert pages dated 1864.
Interesting inscription to the title page, realting to a Thomas Clarkson, BOSTON 1864, 103, no 4. Interesting as this places the book in Union territory, during the American Civil War. Unsure if the numbers relate to regiments in the Boston, Massachusetts area. What is certainly true is that traditional ballands and folk songs from Britain were popular amongst Civil war soldiers on both sides, and were often sung for moral and entertainment purposes. As far as the owner Charles Clarkson, looking into the war records, there appears to be only one record returned under the name Charles Clarkson, coincidentally from the Boston area, who was part of the 3rd Massachusetts Voluntary Unit, hard to say if its the same person.
Previous owners inscription to the ffep REX C RUSSELL, author and local historian.
