A LOVELY CofA WATERMARK 9d VIOLET KANGAROO VARIETY: “NARROW BREAK UNDER 'A' OF POSTAGE" - BANWELL & PARSONS LISTED AT POSITION 3L14 SCARCE MARSUPIAL (1st TIME LISTED) - CV APPROX CV$200+
The CofA Watermark 9d Violet Kangaroo was printed by J. ASH in February 1932 and issued on 20 April 1932. The stamps were issued to Post Offices in sheets of 120 off Plates 3 (upper plate) and 4 (lower plate) each sheet with two panes of 60 each in 10 rows of six stamps. They were replaced by the 9d Platypus definitive on 1 September 1938, but before that, there were some 24,720,000 CofA Violets printed over 6 printings between February 1932 and November 1937. These marsupials were used as the parcel (scale 2) rate and as the air mail rate to British SE Asia and the Dutch East Indies. This variety is listed in the very comprehensive study of the Australian 9d Violet Kangaroo by A.D. Banwell & R.F. Parsons titled: THE 9d KANGAROO STAMPS (2005) as:
3L14: SHADING BELOW POSTAGE: NARROW BREAK IN FIRST LINE, UNDER LEFT SIDE OF A. 3rd to CofA WATERMARKS.
The variety is NOT listed in the Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) however the vast majority of the varieties it lists in the CofA Watermark are listed at $100 each. This stamp is a much scarcer variety than the 'blanket approach to CV of $100 (typical allocation by ACSC). This one will be missing from most collections. This is the FIRST TIME I have found and listed this 9d Kangaroo in many thousands of listings of Kangaroo varieties. The variety recurs at 3L14 … that is … it is the 14th STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE 3 (the Upper Plate used to print the Die IIb CofA 9d Violet Kangaroos). This is a very nice example.
