Victorian Autograph Album Page – Four Mid‑19th‑Century Figures Samuel Wilberforce – Sir William Fergusson – Alexander Forbes – Bishop John Graham (Chester) Dated 1861 (Chester Postmark)

A good mid‑Victorian mixed autograph group comprising three senior churchmen and one of the most celebrated surgeons of the period, mounted together on a 19th‑century album leaf. All items are original and period, not modern copies.

Includes:

  • Samuel Wilberforce (1805–1873) – Bishop of Oxford & Winchester. Clear clipped signature, the familiar rounded Wilberforce hand.

  • Sir William Fergusson (1808–1877) – 1st Baronet, eminent Victorian surgeon, Surgeon‑in‑Ordinary to Queen Victoria. Clipped signature “Sir W. Ferguson / Ferguson”.

  • Alexander Forbes (1817–1875) – Bishop of Brechin, central figure in the Scottish Episcopal Eucharistic controversy. Clipped episcopal signature “Brechin”.

  • John Graham (1798–1865) – Bishop of Chester. Original envelope front addressed in his hand to Rev. G. D. Thomson, The Parsonage, Brighouse, Yorkshire, with a clear CHESTER / JY 12 / 61 postmark, perfectly within his episcopate (1848–1865).

A coherent mid‑Victorian cluster, ideal for collectors of ecclesiastical history, medical history, or autograph albums. The 1861 cover anchors the page chronologically and ties all four figures into the same active period.

  • PROVENANCE:

    • One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil. 

    Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
