DETAIL: David Smith was born into fairly modest means in Benfleet, Essex, England. His early life was much influenced by time spent in the company of his grandparents and he was introduced to painting by his paternal grandfather, himself very able. School holidays were spent with his mother's parents in Derbyshire, in countryside which was to inspire him as he grew, much moved by the beauty of the rivers, streams, valleys, hills and trees of the surrounding landscape.
Although he showed considerable flair in artistic subjects at school, family circumstances and financial hardships resulted in Smith leaving education at the age of fifteen. His time and energy were to be devoted to supporting his mother and sister, and later his own wife and children, through a series of manual, factory and labouring jobs. Any spare time, however, he spent honing his skills as a painter. He became friends with Tony Sheath, a fellow landscapist, who was to help his development as an artist.
In 1974, four of his paintings were accepted by the discerning Graham Petley Gallery in Rayliegh, Essex. These were quickly sold, and a request soon followed for more. From here, David Smith's career as an artist soared. In 1976, with the pace of demand for his work overtaking his ability to supply, he took the decision to apply himself as a full-time professional artist. He and his family now moved to Cold Norton, a village in the heart of the Essex countryside.
The decision was a wise one. David Smith has since become one of Britain's most celebrated and popular artists, able to transfer the aesthetic and spiritual appreciation of nature which so inspired him since his boyhood days, through his brush on to canvas. His paintings still are known to sell within weeks of availability; and his works are also very popular in Europe and the United States, accounting for half of his annual output.
Since 2006, his work has been displayed at the Jones and Terwilliger Galleries, in Carmel and Palm Desert, California. He has been exhibited at: Heritage House Gallery, Bermuda, 1986 & 1991; Harrods Picture Gallery, London, 1991 & 1993; and Simic Gallery Exhibition, Carmel, California, 1999 & 2001. He has also provided commissioned works for the Prince and Princess of Thailand and the Sultan of Oman.

Frames: Because of the fragile nature of picture frames, all frames are offered free with the painting. You are welcome to ask questions about the frame condition before buying but we cannot accept returns or requests for 'part refunds' because a frame arrives with some existing damage not sustained in transit.

All paintings are sold without glass for safety in transit. Replacement glass costs just a few pounds, is easily fitted, and saves the strong likelihood of your artwork getting damaged in the post if glass were included. We ship within a maximum of 3 days of purchase and will use a variety of 24-48 hour parcel carriers including Parcelforce, UPS, Yodel, City Link and Hermes. Internationally we generally ship UPS on a 5 day service. We ship worldwide apart from The Russian Federation and certain other countries where we cannot get parcel company coverage. You are also welcome to collect from our address near Cirencester, Cotswolds – at no charge. Unfortunately we have to charge a small premium for UK Highlands & Islands as well as Northern Ireland, please email for a postal quote if you live in these areas of the country.
We accept returns when notified within 48 hours of receipt. If the return is due to an error on our part then we will pay up to £12 for the return postage. If the return is for other reasons, not the fault of ourselves, then we will not pay for the return postage but will refund the full purchase price (excluding postage) on receipt.
