A scarce specialist publication devoted entirely to The Grenville Landscape of Wotton House, published as New Arcadian Journal numbers 65/66 in 2009.
This volume records the proceedings of the Wotton Landscape Conference held at Wotton House on 16–17 October 2009 and examines the history, architecture, symbolism, development and restoration of the celebrated landscape.
The Wotton landscape was developed through the involvement of William Pitt the Elder, George Grenville and Lancelot “Capability” Brown, with later restoration forming another important strand of the book.
The volume brings together a substantial collection of scholarly essays and illustrations covering the architectural and social history of Wotton House and its gardens.
Contributors include David Gladstone, Patrick Eyres, Michael Symes, Michael Bevington, Richard Wheeler, John Phibbs, Steffie Shields, Sarah Couch, Michael G. Cousins and Kate Felus.
Subjects include the relationship between Wotton and Stowe, the Grenville family, the Brownian landscape, water features, avenues, architectural sight-lines, social history and the later restoration of the grounds.
Illustrated throughout with maps, plans, drawings and other visual material relating to Wotton House and its historic landscape. The striking cover illustration is by Chris Broughton.
