1811–1815 Evangelical Devotional Manuscript – Edwardus Randal (Edward Randall) – “Redemption”, “Warfare”, “Faith” – 3‑Part Theological Treatise on 5 Lettersheets (8p written)

DESCRIPTION: A rare and beautifully preserved early‑19th‑century Evangelical devotional manuscript, composed in 1811 / 1815, written by Edwardus Randal (the Latinized signature of Edward Randall/Randal). This is a three‑section theological treatiseRedemption, Warfare, and Faith—written in a clean, legible hand across five folded lettersheets (20p total), with eight recto pages written and all versos left plain‑back.

The manuscript is a classic example of private Evangelical devotional writing from the post‑Napoleonic revival period. Randal writes with striking fluency, blending scriptural exposition, Evangelical doctrine, and English literary references. His quotation of Addison’s Cato (“the war of Elements, the wreck of Matter, and the crush of Worlds”) and Young’s Night Thoughts shows a man of grammar‑school education, steeped in both biblical and classical literature.

The three sections form a deliberate spiritual arc:

  • Redemption — Christ’s sacrifice, justification, and salvation.

  • Warfare — the believer’s struggle with sin, temptation, and assurance (including a substantial 1815 insertion expanding Romans 7).

  • Faith — the nature of saving faith vs. dead faith; ends mid‑sentence, indicating the author intended further continuation.

This is not a sermon draft or chapel tract. It is a personal devotional book, the kind kept by educated Evangelical laymen, Methodist‑adjacent readers, and Nonconformist households between 1780–1830. The 1815 revision shows Randal returning to his earlier work to refine doctrine, clarify spiritual experience, and formalise his meditations.

A rare survival of private Georgian Evangelical spirituality, with named authorship, full dating, and a complete internal theological structure.
