MARGARET LOCKWOOD & ANTHONY NEWLEY TWO VINTAGE STUDIO PUBLICITY PORTRAITS FACSIMILE SIGNATURES ON FRONTS – NEWLEY MS SIGNATURE ON REVERSE

A pair of mid‑century British studio publicity portraits, each carrying the printed & impressed facsimile signature of the performer on the image surface — the standard Rank/Gainsborough promotional format widely circulated to cinemas, fan magazines and collectors.

Margaret Lockwood (1916–1990) Studio portrait with printed facsimile signature “Margaret Lockwood” on the front. Reverse blank, no inscriptions. Typical of Lockwood’s late‑1930s/1940s publicity material during her Gainsborough and Rank peak.

Anthony Newley (1931–1999) Studio portrait with printed facsimile signature “Anthony Newley” on the front. Reverse carries a genuine manuscript pencil signature “Anthony” in his own hand, written directly onto the paper — a short personal ms note/signature entirely distinct from the printed facsimile on the recto.

Context Although Lockwood and Newley did not appear together in film or stage productions, both were Rank Organisation stars in adjacent eras, and their studio portraits were circulated through the same publicity channels.

A neat two‑item lot combining a classic Gainsborough/Rank portrait of Lockwood with an early‑career Newley piece carrying a genuine reverse ms signature.

Condition as photos. Guaranteed Original. All items can be returned for a full refund if found to be not as described.

  • Margaret Mary Day Lockwood (Sep 1916 – Jul 1990) was a British actress. One of Britain's most popular film stars of the 1930s and 1940s, her film appearances included The Lady Vanishes (1938), Night Train to Munich (1940), The Man in Grey (1943), and The Wicked Lady (1945). She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Actress for the 1955 film Cast a Dark Shadow. She also starred in the television series Justice (1971–1974). Ronald Bergan of The Guardian called her "one of the most beautiful, energetic, and spirited actresses in the history of British cinema."

  • Anthony Newley (Sep 1931 – Apr 1999) was an English actor, director, comedian, singer, and composer. A "latter-day British Al Jolson", he achieved widespread success in song, and on stage and screen. "One of Broadway's greatest leading men", from 1959 to 1962 he scored a dozen entries on the UK Singles Chart, including two number one hits. Newley won the 1963 Grammy Award for Song of the Year for "What Kind of Fool Am I?", sung by Sammy Davis Jr., and wrote "Feeling Good", which became a signature hit for Nina Simone. His songs have been sung by a wide variety of singers including Fiona Apple, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Michael Bublé, and Mariah Carey.
