The Devotional Family Bible, Volume II, by Rev. Alexander Fletcher, D.D., published in London by George Virtue.
A substantial 19th-century illustrated family Bible containing the Old and New Testaments, with Practical and Experimental Reflections on Each Verse and extensive marginal references.
This is Volume II only and contains 2041 pages. It is bound in decorative brown leather with gilt tooling and decoration, with attractive coloured marbled endpapers. The volume is illustrated throughout with numerous engraved plates depicting biblical and religious scenes.
The title page does not show a publication date. A period ownership label attached to the marbled endpaper is handwritten with a name which appears to read George Smith and is dated 1853. This provides evidence that the volume was in existence by 1853, but 1853 is not being presented as a publisher-stated publication date.
Condition
Poor antique condition, with substantial age-related wear and damage. Please examine all photographs carefully before purchasing.
The leather binding is heavily worn, rubbed and deteriorated. There is extensive damage and loss to the spine, including missing leather, splitting and exposed binding material. The boards show heavy rubbing, scuffing, marking and edge/corner wear, and there is significant weakness/damage to the binding.
Internally there is extensive age-related foxing, spotting, staining, discolouration and water marking. Individual pages and plates may have additional marks, creasing, edge wear, tears or other age-related damage. No attempt has been made to restore the volume.
Despite its poor condition, this is an impressive and extremely substantial antique volume retaining its period leather and gilt binding, colourful marbled endpapers and numerous engraved illustrations.
