Frederick Taylor 1875-1963. Born in London and studied at Academies Julian in Paris, then Goldsmiths College school of Art. Also in Italy.

An architect by profession who was also a prolific landscape artist, particularly in the North of England.

Became a member of the Art Workers Guild in 1924.

From 1908-1940 he painted railway posters as seen in railway carriages in their time. Also travel posters and other illustrations as seen on the London Underground, the LNER, and the GWR.

In addition to these paintings he exhibited watercolour pictures at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

When he submitted his gallery watercolours he frequently signed them F TAYLOR in block capitals bottom left or right in colours that merged into the painting itself.

The FTAYLOR signature was a common alternative signature he used later in life.

The clean deliberate linework combined with transparent washes of colour it was executed as a design layout, illustration or preparatory sketch for a print or publication campaign..

The size of this painting matches commercial proof, design mock ups or book illustration layout. He was frequently commissioned by publishing firms and transport companies to create square artwork blocks to sit alongside printed text columns.
