There is a groove in the base for the glass dome to sit in and so it matches perfectly.

The dome is made manual back in the time so the glass is not so clear and  "as perfect", glass as they can do in these days. In the 19th century, more specified the Victorian era they made it with other kind of materials that were not so pure. 

This reflects in unique details as light bells, minor imperfections in the glass, this gives the dome more character and flair.
