Here is an early and rare pitcher with Sample #9895 bearing the Gorham marks for that date, 15 November 1897.

And by rare I mean it.

According to reliable sources only about 4,800 to 8,000 items were ever made between 1897 and 1912, over a very wide range of forms and styles.

The last time I saw a similar one on the market was back in the 80's.

Referring to Larry Pristo's book this pitcher took 45 hours to make and 76 hours of chasing !

But it's not just the virtuosity and the amount of silver to appreciate.

It's the imagination that is unique.

In our modern times its difficult to imagine anyone even capable of producing such work at all.

There are scenes of trailing seaweed, various marine creatures and two of women, one cradling a baby.

Then there is the handle which is in the form of some sort of hooded sea dragon.

All in all a very impressive article of cultural and historical significance.

No inscription mars this gem.
