This 1968 Dominican Republic medio peso is a large copper-nickel circulation coin featuring a detailed Liberty portrait opposite the Dominican national coat of arms.

Issued during the opening years of the Dominican Republic’s Fourth Republic, the coin continued a design language previously associated with the country’s silver half pesos while using copper-nickel for circulation. The Liberty portrait faces left beneath the unusual weight inscription “12½ Gramos,” while the opposite side displays the national arms and the motto “Dios, Patria, Libertad”—God, Fatherland, Liberty. Struck by the Royal Mint in London, this two-year plain-edge subtype combines Dominican national symbolism with British mint production.
