A superb original Victorian map of Lancashire, published by Letts, Son & Co. Limited, London Bridge, E.C., dating to circa 1884.
This is a genuine antique map rather than a modern reproduction and forms a particularly attractive large-scale record of Victorian Lancashire.
The map is headed “LANCASTER” and covers the historic county of Lancashire in considerable detail, including Lancaster, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Blackpool, Morecambe Bay, Furness and numerous surrounding towns and villages.
Of particular interest is the extensive Victorian railway network, with the many railway lines and routes then crossing Lancashire clearly depicted. Roads, market towns, parliamentary boroughs, county boundaries and other contemporary geographical information are also shown.
The original colouring remains particularly attractive, with different areas picked out in subtle period colours and the principal towns highlighted.
Genuine c.1884 Letts Map
Importantly, the reverse retains its original specialist dealer’s label from Earley Maps and Prints of Bath, which states:
“Guaranteed to be a genuine antique map”
By: LETTS Date: c.1884
The original dealer stock number AM2449 is also recorded.
Interestingly, this is consecutive to another Letts map from the same collection, suggesting the maps were originally acquired together.
The map has been professionally presented behind glass with a substantial cream mount and a traditional wooden frame with gilt detailing. It displays extremely well and would make an impressive decorative piece.
There is some age-related toning, spotting and general wear consistent with a genuine Victorian map of approximately 140 years of age. The frame also has normal signs of previous use.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and condition report.
