On offer is a Rare Vintage GTE Automatic Electric Superphone 7720 Telephone.

The Model 7720 represents one of the earliest generations of "smart" home telephones, combining telephone functions with a digital clock, calendar, alarm, timer, and memory dialling. These features were quite advanced before caller ID and cordless phones became common.
Superphone Corporation was a California electronics company that produced premium electronic telephones during the period immediately following the breakup of the Bell System, when consumers were beginning to buy telephones instead of leasing them from the phone company.
The phone has GTE Automatic Electric moulded into the base but the label says Superphone Corporation Model 7720. This strongly suggests that Superphone Corporation designed and marketed the electronics while GTE Automatic Electric manufactured the plastic housing (and possibly assembled the phone) under contract. This kind of OEM manufacturing arrangement was fairly common in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. It indicates that the base was moulded in November 1978, which means the phone itself was almost certainly assembled in late 1978 or early 1979.
This push-button telephone with a red LED display showing the time/day and date and featuring a rich brown colour, showcases the iconic design and functionality of its era. The housing has a nice gloss with no obvious cracks, the buttons appear complete and it retains the original handset and coiled cord. All internals are complete and original (including 4 corroded batteries) but we have not been able to get it to work as it comes with its original American 2-pin plug and we can not find an adapter to fit.

This is a very rare classic piece of American telecommunications history made during the 1970's and with the GTE Automatic Electric brand and model name, this collectable telephone embodies the nostalgia and charm of telephones from a bygone era.
