A highly desirable and increasingly scarce Della Robbia pottery vase designed and decorated by Hannah Jones, dating to around 1900. This is a particularly attractive example, featuring a richly modelled Arts & Crafts floral design with large stylised blooms set against an intricately incised ground, finished in vibrant greens, turquoise blues and warm yellow tones.
The elegant bottle form and hand-decorated surface embody the distinctive aesthetic for which the Birkenhead Della Robbia pottery became renowned. Examples of this quality and visual impact are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the market, so it is hard to let this one go as I have enjoyed it on display for a while.
I particularly like the combination of the bold floral motifs and the deeply worked background decoration, which gives the vase a remarkable depth and presence even from a distance.
