A LOVELY DIE II CofA WATERMARK 2/- MAROON KANGAROO VARIETY: "WHITE FLAW UNDER SECOND 'L' OF SHILLINGS" - PLATE POSITION 1L33 ACSC 40(1)f - PREMIUM EXAMPLE - 2025 CV$70 (FOR PREMIUM STANDARD)
The CofA Die II 2/- Maroon Kangaroo was printed by JOHN ASH in April 1935 and issued on 6 August 1935 (in Brisbane). They were printed off two Plates (Plate 1 - Upper and Plate 2 - Lower) each with 120 stamps-on, in two panes of 60, each of 10 horizontal rows of 6 Stamps.
These stamps were used to 'make-up' the higher telegram charges; and the higher postal, airmail and bulk postage rate of the day. There were nine printings made between June 1935 and January 1944 totalling 25,560,000 stamps before the new REDRAWN Die was used in 1945. This lovely variety stamp is listed by THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE “KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) as: ACSC 40(1)f: "White flaw on second 'L' of SHILLINGS"
The variety recurs at position 1L33 ... that is ... it is the 33rd STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE 1 (the Upper Plate of the two used from 1913 to print the 2/- values). This particular CofA example is a beauty. Great centering, very good perforations, lovely CDS postmark and colour. The small dent in the inside of the bottom frame to the left of the variety is also apparent (not documented). The reference scan is from the 2025 ACSC. Lovely.
