This listing is for a vintage "Johnston-Selmer" alto saxophone mouthpiece. It dates to the late 1930's. Merle Johnston was a well-known teacher and studio musician at that time. Despite the "New York" marking, this was actually made in France by Lelandais. It has a very large round chamber and deeply scooped inner side walls. It is stamped "original" on the side, which is a reference to the tip opening that the namesake preferred (a smaller opening was also offered). The tip opening on this is still pretty small, as was the norm at that time. It measures .060".

This mouthpiece is in good used condition. There are a few tiny imperfections on the facing, but for the most part it is smooth. There are no tooth indentations on the beak. There is significant ligature scratching/scuffing on the exterior, and some light scratching on the interior, but this in no way affects how it plays. The rubber is still black and shiny, and the logo is clear. It has been cleaned/sanitized.

Thanks again for looking!
