PROVENANCE: BOOKER and NOBEL PRIZE WINNER J.M. COETZEE? It is quite likely, though not certain, that this warm presentation copy and gift inscription is to
J. (John) M. Coetzee.
The reasons for this attribution are:
Collaborators are often recipients of presentation copies of the book they worked on.
De Bruyckere and John Coetzee collaborated previously on ‘Allen Vrees’, 2012.
J. M. Coetzee is a resident of Adelaide, and this book was purchased in Adelaide.
The inscription is in Dutch, and South African J.M. Coetzee is a Dutch speaker.
However, it is also possible, though unlikely, that thisbook was gifted to another Dutch-speaking John, who lives in Adelaide, and with whom the Belgian artist is on intimate terms with.
