For your consideration are two plastic 1950s Chanukah dreidels from BARTON''S BONBONNIERE (later, Barton's Candy Corporation) of New York City. The top cover of the dreidels opened to reveal gold-foil wrapped, milk chocolate Chanukah gelt.
- Blue dreidel measures about 2 inches in height and 1 inch on each side. It is marked "ITALY."
- Red and clear plastic dreidel about 3 inches in height and 1-1/2 inches on each side. It is marked "1952."
Barton’s fundamentally changed Chanukah celebrations by introducing mass-market, highly collectible plastic dreidels, often sold pre-filled with chocolate gelt or as part of interactive holiday games.While wood and clay were historical norms, Barton's mid-century innovation helped popularize the colorful plastic dreidels that remain a global holiday standard today.
