Australian Victorian Artillery Canteen token valued at one penny, dating back to circa 1890.
Obverse (Front): Features the portrait of Queen Victoria (the standard "Young Head" design facing left) surrounded by the text "VIC. ARTY. CANTEEN". You can also spot the small manufacturer or designer stamp "S&M" near the base of the Queen's neck.
These private military issue pieces served as localized legal tender inside the military barracks and canteen halls for the Victorian Artillery (the colonial defense forces of Victoria prior to the Federation of Australia). Soldiers used them to purchase refreshments, tobacco, or daily supplies.Because they were limited strictly to canteen use,
S&M" stamp found on the neck truncation of the Queen's portrait stands for Stokes & Martin, a highly prominent 19th-century button, medal, and token manufacturing firm based in Melbourne, Australia.
Stokes & Martin The Partnership: The firm was established by Thomas Stokes (a famous pioneering Australian die-sinker and medalist) and Joseph Martin. They operated under the joint name Stokes & Martin from 1873 until 1889.
